Okay – shit happens. There’s surgeries, babies, plumbing emergencies, and graduate degrees to finish up.

Holidays, of course – can holidays keep you too busy to write?

Maybe for a few days. Or even a week or two.

When you’re a writer, you’re a writer all the way.

You have a story in your head. You have an essay you’re thinking about. You’ve got decisions to avoid make. That, my friends, is all writing. It is more than putting words on a page. We may wish that were the form our writing was taking all the time but that is just one way in which we write.

You could be sitting on the couch watching tv, thinking I’ll never get back to that book I was writing.

Believe it or not THAT’S WRITING TOO.

Procrastination, resistance, processing, decision making, even avoidance are all part of writing.

And the more often you think… I have to get back to that book… the more likely you are to pick up the book where you left it, and rejoin its plot.

In 1974, there was a series of  commercials in which a young woman was playing tennis, cooking or maybe going shopping. And she would turn to the camera and say “I’m cleaning my bathroom bowl.” There was a new product that flooded your bowl with blue cleanser every time you flushed. You were cleaning your bathroom bowl, whether you noticed or not.

Writing is like cleaning your bathroom bowl in 1974.

It is automatic. It happens when you’re doing other things. And unless you’re on a vintage commercial, you don’t usually brag about it. You don’t have an opportunity to turn to the camera and say…

“I’m having a new idea…”

“I’m berating myself for procrastinating…”

“I’m avoiding everything to do with writing…”

But you’re thinking it. And you’re slowly and automatically writing.

So, if you want to take all that energy and bring it to the keyboard, or notebook, and eventually to your reading public, all you really need is a new system to get those activities marshalled into productivity.
