Sex, Lies & Creativity – Gender Differences in Creative Thinking

by Julia Roberts (Difference Press, 2014)
Available as an e-book, Amazon.com

Sex, Lies & Creativity debunks the lies we tell ourselves and others about creativity and gender. Using a scientific and researched approach, the book crystallizes the innate differences between men and women and what impact the gender variations might have on how we create, alone and in groups.

Neurological, biological and developmental differences give each gender opportunities to shine, advance and create. Roberts writes to help each gender build empathy and accommodation for their own and other’s differences, and see them as unique offerings to the creative process and end-products.

The book’s conversational tone, interactive charts and probing questions open a dialogue on this controversial topic. Vive la Difference!

Amazon Reviews for Sex, Lies & Creativity:

I love the way Julia writes. Very engaging and thought provoking.

For such a short book, I’ll be thinking about it for a looooong time. There’s a ton of new information on how we create.

We all know that men and women are wired differently. In Sex, Lie, and Creativity, Roberts does an excellent job of explaining how those differences play out in our “real” lives. I’ve been married over 35 years and still marvel over how easy it is to “trip over” our gender differences. I’ve already noticed instances in my own life that match up to the research and science provided. Very well written with intriguing differences between men and women that effect many aspects of our creative lives. Highly recommend!

Julia’s provocative style through her well-placed questions make this book an interactive journey. I paused frequently to consider. This book challenges me to think about how to define and achieve equality when every person enters the room with such different strengths, challenges and talents.

This book will rock your world and what you think your limitations are. Life altering!

Being creative means being alive. And understanding our gender differences is such an eye-opener to how more alive we can be in the world, once we have a level of understanding. Rather than bickering, expecting, and demanding one or the other side to change or be right or wrong, this book really goes to the heart of acceptance, understanding and love for our differences. This all leads to a more peaceful mind that allows our natural creativity to flow, allowing us to create our life on our terms.

Motherhood to Otherhood – Use the Lessons Learned as Mom to Create a New Life

by Julia Roberts (Running Press, 2008)
Available on Amazon or Get one signed. Just send an email to the author!

For middle moms – still in midst of motherhood, but trying to make a grab for – Otherhood.  Not the precious baby mom and not yet an empty nester… the mom everyone forgets about – the middle mom.  They work, they cook, drive kids to daily activities… just momming away, day after day.

Motherhood to Otherhood finds and repurposes the nine lessons from pregnancy that gives moms a positive – and known – way forward. It introduces the unpregnancy – a nine-month time for every mom who wants to grow and change, alongside their children. The book lays out 9 months, 9 lessons to a new you. Mothers all over are using Unpregnancy as a model to help birth their brainchild.

Reviews for Motherhood to Otherhood:

Motherhood to Otherhood was pure validation for me. I came to appreciate what I had, and the life I had created for myself and my family. Unpregnancy made me the yardstick by which I measured the success of my life.  My satisfaction has grown, and so has my business.

I’ve changed a lot around the house, and with my kids and husband. And to everyone’s relief, I’m not volunteering as much.  I don’t get trapped into things I don’t want to do. I’m happier, and everyone seems happier.

Unpregnancy gave me the courage to hear my own voice, to figure out what I needed and wanted out of my life. The results of my Unpregnancy really energized me and woke me up to how great things can really be.

Unpregnancy was very satisfying because it gave me permission to focus my energy on developing myself, rather than just keeping the family on tracke. It was a wonderful period of growth for me. I really liked Julia Roberts’ bubbly, funny writing style.

When I first read about Unpregnancy, I was feeling isolated and lacking personal confidence that I know I once had. Motherhood to Otherhood was instrumental in my personal growth over the past two years. I learned that it was okay as a mother to think of yourself. You don’t have to lose sight of your own identity. You should have direction, goals, desires etc. It not only makes you happier, but your family and those around you stronger. Just because you are a mother doesn’t mean you have to play it safe with your own wishes. We should wish for ourselves what we wish for our kids. Laughter is the key, and an underlying tone of Motherhood to Otherhood.

Since reading Motherhood to Otherhood, I’ve grown with my music, and I’ve really set aside more time for practicing, developing skills and I’m even teaching. I joined a quartet and the symphony orchestra. My kids see this side of me that makes them so proud of their mommy. Mommy is more than just Mommy, now. She is a professional musician.

RV There Yet? – A Cross-Country Cautionary Tale

by Julia Roberts (Booksurge, 2005)
Available on Amazon or Get one signed. Just send an email to the author.

When Julia Roberts faces a bleak and boring summer with her kids, she decides to hit the road in a 1985 RV she bought on ebay. Her husband stayed behind to work and worry, and Julia and three kids (ages 6, 9, and 12) kept journals along the way. The family tells the story in five voices – each of the kids tell things from their points of view, interspersed with Julia’s lively and funny narrative. Husband, Adam waits and wonders why he can’t reach them on the cell phone for days on end. Enjoy the poignant insights into what makes America great, and the hysterical accounts of breakdowns – both mechanical and mental.

Author’s note: This little book put us on a second RV trip from Maine to Florida – with 4 paying sponsors and tv appearances in 7 major markets – Buffalo, Boston, NYC, Philly, Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Tampa/St. Pete. We stayed at KOA campgrounds, hosted movie nights and screened our RV There Yet? cartoons and sold books as we traveled. Sponsors included: Magellan GPS, KOA Campgrounds, Epson Movie Projector, and GEOcaching.com

“In 2003, Julia Roberts tackled a cross-country road trip with a part-time husband, and three good-natured children in a needy-second-hand RV… and found time to make everyone keep a journal.

”Blessed with humor and patience, Ms. Roberts gives voice to the wanderlust and anxieties of all parents through this meandering journey.  Stretch your legs at each of the kid’s contributions and I guarantee you’ll arrive refreshed.

“‘RV There Yet?’ should be required reading for any family contemplating the Great American Road Trip.”
